71 EARLY 19TH CENTURY SANTOS, CRISTO CRUCIFICADO (CHRIST CRUCIFIED): Sublime, museum type figure of a wooden Christ, nailed to the cross. At the craftsman shop, this figure did not undergo all the steps to create a "completed" wooden sculpture, but by the nature of its superior wood modeling, (contours of shape), and the tragic beauty, inherint in the body of a suffering Christ, it is an outstanding piece. Few complete Santos acheive the depth & movement in space of this particular figure. This wooden sculpture is a magnificent testiment to sculpture that "feels", in this case, the pathos of the Crucifixician. The viewer is invited to partake in the vivid expericence of this piece. Overall height, 24". Est. $1,800.00 - $2,500.00.**.No Sale
71A LA VIRGEN DEL ROSARIO ("OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY"): 19th Century portable wooden virgen on small pedestal, surrounded by a mandorla of hundreds of ex-votos. Stand with small vases attached in stylized crosses around its borders are ecclesiastical in style, & this strongly suggest that this particular virgen clothed in authenic garb, decorated with human hair, & embellished by glass eyes, came from a church. Spiritually speaking, the history of this particular piece seems extraordinary, in the believers imagination, and evident to them by the multitude of ex-votos surrounding her. In terms of answering the pleas of the faithful, this virgen was apparently considered miraculous by the believers, because she answered supplications & prayers with much frequency attested by the multitude of tin ex-votos that hang from her mandorla, (or miraculous aura that surrounds a saint). For every miracle granted, an ex-votos is pinned. This piece is country rustic & sublime in the expression captured in the spirtuality of her face & eyes. Noticeably, she is a blond, in a captured land, most populated by forcibly converted Indians. At this level, the wood sculpture attests to the Spanish Roman-Catholic success of impossed mestizage (fusion of culture, race & religion) in the Americas. 17 1/2" in height. Est. $1,400.00 - $1,600.00.**.No Sale
71B EARLY 19TH CENTURY OIL OF MOTHER & CHILD, LA VIRGEN DEL REFUGIO: (Our lady of refuge). Use of zinc plate dates the painting around the beginning of the 19th Century. This painting is a fine example of Colonial Spanish art. It's execution is flawless & is characterized by hieratic style of painting. Hieratic refers to a style of solemn religious posing, with certain plastic qualities of stiffnes evident in the way the painter has decided to model his subject in the paint. This was not an uncommon style in Spain (especially the south), it became an influence in Spanish-Colonial art. Encased in a gold gilt, velvet matted frame, image size measures 12 1/2" x 9 1/4". Est. $1,600.00 - $1,800.00.**.No Sale

It is important to notice the the size of this particular Christ makes him portable, so that He can quite literally accompany the believer, in any suitcase, to any Grado or Church.
