IMPORTANT NEW JERSEY HOUSE SAMPLER: Wrought by ''Sara Van Liew born November 14, 1804. This is a rare find as it was privately purchased from a descendent in the family and has never been on the open market. Along with the family provenance, which dates to 1572, there also is a drawing of the family crest. The Van Liew family were French Huguenots and fled France after the St. Bartholomew massacre. They fled to Belgium, eventually migrating to America. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground using Algerian eye, satin stitch, cross stitch and a variety of other stitches. Alphabet is in upper case and lowercase, numbers 1 to 10 in cross stitch.
