HOLMES, J.H., (American, 1812-?): Depicts a fierce lion in a desert scene, Calligraphy, worked in black ink, signed ''Executed by J.H. Holmes'', measures 22 1/2'' x 17 1/2'', most likely in original grain painted frame. One of two very famous Ohio Calligraphy drawings by J.H. Holmes. Holmes was an unmarried uncle of Oliver Wendell Holmes. This drawing has been in the possession of family members and was personally purchased from a distant relative. This is the first time this has been offered for sale to the public. Circa mid to late 1800's. |

HOLMES, J.H., (American, 1812-?): Depicts a large swept eagle with Miss Liberty on his back holding a plaque inscribed ''Freedom'' ''Prosperity''. In her right hand she holds an unfurled banner with the inscriptions ''Executed with a steel pen by J.H.Holmes'' and ''Wilkins run licking Co.O'' verse titled ''The Pen'' with two verses. Also inscribed on the left side is the quote ''One ink drop on a solitary thought hath moved the mind of millions''. Quote on the right side reads ''Kind hearts are more than coronets and simple faith more than Norman Blood''. In each corner is the likeness of a calling card embellished with birds, upper left card honors R.B.Hayes, upper right card honors J.A.Garfield, lower left card pays tribute to D.T.Ames and the lower right card pays tribute to P.R.Spencer. P.R. Spencer was given credit for introducing and promoting calligraphy drawings, therefore, they are often referred to as ''Spencerian drawings. Calligraphy, worked in brown ink. measures 22 1/2'' x 17 1/2''. One of two very famous Ohio Calligraphy drawings by J.H. Holmes. Holmes was an unmarried uncle of Oliver Wendell Holmes.
