15 | BUGATTI, Rembrandt, (Italian, 1884-1916): Elephant, Bronze, 10.8'' h. x 15'' w. x 4.8'' d., incised signature, stamped Cire Perdue, AA Hebrard and incised (2), circa 1912, 19.5 lbs/8.85 kilograms, fresh from the estate. Illustrated on Page 329 in Bugatti's Repertoire Monographique by Fromanger. We have been made aware that there are only 2 known examples of this casting; the one that appears in the catalog raisonne, and this piece we are offering. Rare and highly prized, Bugatti's animal bronzes have commanded in excess of 2 million dollars at auction. Bugatti battled depression, and as a result took his life at a very young age of 31. He is of the same family as Carlo, a furniture craftsman, and the most famous, Ettore, automotive engineer and design legend. This piece was inherited from several wealthy ladies who were world travelers, to their caretaker over 45 years ago, to his nephew approximately 10 years ago, who had no idea of the importance or value until bringing it to an appraisal fair that a Burchard representative was working. | 170000 | |
