1127 | LAWRENCE, David Herbert, (English, 1885-1930): A.L.S., signed and dated 1917, to his literary agent with very nice content especially regarding future works. Reads ''I return Chaltos agreement, signed & initialed. Don't you think we might have had 20% after the first 1000 or 2000? - I always have hopes of the future. And I wish you could bring them to give me twelve instead of six presentation copies. -Let me know when the fix the prices & the formal. I will send you on the MS of ''All the Gates'' in a day or two. On second thoughts, I send it all at once. You will see it is based upon the more superficial ''Reality of Peace''. But THIS is pure metaphysics, especially later on: and perfectly sound metaphysics, that will stand all the attacks of technical philosophies. Bits that might be very unpopular, I might leave out. I am doing, in the hopes of relieving my ominous financial prospects, a set of essays on ''The Transcendental Element in American Literature''. You may marvel at such a subject, but it interests me. I was thinking of speaking to Amy Lowell about it. Her brother is Principal of Harvard, and she can touch the pulse of the Yale Review & things like that. We might get the essays into a periodical here in England - seems my only hope - I won't & can't wright Strand Stories. D. H. Lawrence''. Dear Sir, Mr. Fletcher has sent me your letter of the 24th with typed enclosures which I return herewith. It would indeed be a most useful thing if such a document as you suggest were published, but, assuming such a document to be truthful (and the time has now come to tell the truth). The Department of Education would not allow it to be published. We are at war because we, as a nation, took no measures to preserve peace by adequate preparation; because we did all that lay in our power to discredit and deride those who recommended and such preparation; because we lied to ourselves and to each other; because we cloaked our own extreme sloth and inadequacy under a pretence of extreme virtue. The educational value of the war is that we should understand not what our enemy has done but we, ourselves, have neglected to do. Yours faithfully, Rudyard Kipling''.
