ROETTER, Paulus, (German-American, 1806-1894): Panoramic River Valley Painting with Mountains in the Distance with City on the River, Cattle, Goats, & Figures Scattered Throughout, Oil/Canvas, 24'' x 32 3/8'', signed lower right, encased in a carved and gilded impressionist frame with wear 29 1/2'' x 37 1/2''. Roetter worked in Switzerland until 1845, when he emigrated to the United States, and eventually settled in St. Louis. ''The Matterhorn'', an oil on canvas he did in 1860 is on permanent display at Saint Louis University. Through George Engelmann, a physician and botanist, Roetter became interested in natural history, and produced a large number of drawings of biological specimens. Some of Roetter's original drawings are in Shaw's Museum and ''recognized by authorities as being among the finest ever made.'' He was well regarded for being one of the top botanical illustrators of his generation, with many of his pictures reproduced in reference books.
CONDITION: Scattered areas of craquelure, some paint flecking in the lower margin, and some scattered bits of paint fleck throughout, needs cleaning.
