1104 Click for larger picture APPROX 25-40 YR OLD PAKISTANI BOKHARA HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 4'2'' x 5'11'': This is a tent door cover design rug with its asymmetrical central motifs. These rugs are often mistaken for prayer rugs but that was not their original purpose. Because of their design, these rugs make an interesting statement in an entryway. Although the designs are traditional the colors are not.
CONDITION: There is some shading and stains. And there is some pulled wool on the back, possibly the result of cat scratches.

Fifth volume of the first German edition of De Bry's ''Great Voyages'', containing Girolamo Benzoni's history of the early European settlements in American, based on his 14 years of travels in the New World. First published in Italian in 1565, at the time of publication it was the first such history from other than Spanish sources. There is a double-page copper engraved map of the central/western portion of Mexico proper, ''Hispanie Novae Sive Magnae, Recens Et Vera Descriptio, 1595'', 13'' x 9 1/2'', with two embellished cartouches (Indians, weapons, ornaments), and vignettes of natives, buffalo (''Indian cows''), canoes, and sailing ships. There are two title page and 18 of 22 copper-engraved plates, with letterpress text in the lower portions. The 18 plates (XIX-XXII are missing) show the conquest, enslavement, and torture of the natives, battles between the Spanish and French, etc. There is also a portrait of Columbus on page 3.
CONDITION: It is trimmed to the neat line and is moderately soiled, however attractive. Some internal soiling, corners are worn, some rough outer edges to the selvage, and there are occasional minor tears, including pages 107-8. Pages 95-104 are lacking and there are some repairs to first title page; wrappers are old and plant and front one is separated from body. Sold with all faults.

1273A Click for larger picture APPROX 20-30 YR OLD TURKISH? HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 3'2'' x 5': This rug has the design of an antique Caucasian Shirvan, but is of a more recent make. There are four medallions with alternating pale and deep blue backgrounds down the center of the rust colored field. Pairs of peacocks face each other from the sides of the field. Scattered over the rest of the field are small star and snowflake like motifs. The main border has deep blue ground with diamond shaped flower heads and the paler colored peach ground guard borders are all outlined in pale blue.
CONDITION: There are some stains and some shading in the field by one bird.

Clad in animal skins, and a red tinted, yellow fringed woven skirt, a head wrap bedecked with red, white, and yellow feathers. The dark skinned Indian princess looks demurely straight ahead; forest, palm and palm trees, a waterfall, mountains and a river are depicted in the background. ''America'' is inscribed at her feet and in the bottom margin. An important early engraving with a most impressive historic icon.
CONDITION: Lightly toned and aged but still sharp and clear.

This book was used by Cadwalader when he studied at the College and Academy of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania). Cadwalader was a native of Trenton.
