CHAPMAN, Carlton (American, 1860-1925): Pastel, sight size 15'' x 19.25'', signed lower left, fine William Hartman contemporary gilded frame, 23.25'' x 26.75''. Chapman was commissioned by the US Naval Academy to observe and paint pictures of the battles of 1812. Harper's Magazine Weekly commissioned him to do something similar for the Spanish American War. He went to Cuba with the Navy and observed and sketched some of the most important battles of that war.
