Born Moishe Shagal, Chagall became a French citizen and adopted the French spelling of his name as he became a noted member of the Ecole de Paris. His paintings were influenced by his upbringing as a Hasidic Jew. Russian folklore, peasant life and landscapes persisted in his work all his life.
