Miro studied at the Barcelona Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Gali and eventually moved to Paris. There he became friends with Picasso, Hemingway, Klee and Ernst and was accepted as a Surrealist. In his 70's he produced bronze and in his 80's he worked with Royo who created tapestries. Miro transformed them from appreciated folk art to masterpieces by applying different materials and techniques. | 2250 | |

Born Moishe Shagal, Chagall became a French citizen and adopted the French spelling of his name as he became a noted member of the Ecole de Paris. His paintings were influenced by his upbringing as a Hasidic Jew. Russian folklore, peasant life and landscapes persisted in his work all his life. 1045 | MROZEWSKI, Stefan, (Polish, 1894-1975): 5 Wood Cuts from The Dante's Inferno Series, 18.75'' x 14.5'' with margins, pencil signed, numbered, unframed. Mrozewski studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and Krakow, later residing in Paris and Amsterdam where his art gained recognition. He illustrated M. Schwob's King with the Golden Mask. Mrozewski's subjects included religious themes, landscapes and portraits. He also illustrated books by Dante, Cervantes, Dostoyesky, Rilke, Villon, Schvog and others. Mrozewski emigrated to the United States in 1951. He is largely known for his wood engravings and several examples are included in The Library of Congress' permanent collection. CONDITION: Varies according to print. Several prints have tears and missing paper in margins, scattered foxing and staining, tape removal will be required. Sold as is. |
