1929-1931 PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS TEAM SIGNED ELEPHANT: A most unusual ceramic elephant signed by 23 members of the championship 1929-1931 seasons to include Connie Mack. Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Eddie Collins, Al Simmons, Mickey Cochrane, Waite Hoyt, Eddie Rommel, Roger Cramer, Jim Moore, Rube Walberg, Roy Mahaffey, Mule Haas, Bing Miller, Eric McNair, Phil Todt, John Heving (twice), George Earnshaw, Hank McDonald, Joe Palmisano, Jim Peterson and Lew Krausse. The elephant also has a blurred stamping reading ''World Champion A's, 1929-1930''. Connie Mack adopted the white elephant as the mascot for the Athletics in 1901 when John McGraw of the New York Giants told a reporter that the owner Benjamin Shibe had a ''white elephant on his hands''. This exact elephant was auctioned by Sothebys with SBC Auctions Lot 103, December 10, 2005. Unfortunately the LOA form JSA and PSA/DNA that accompanied this sale has been lost. Overall measures 12 1/4'' h. x 12'' x 5''.
