ANTIQUE CAUCASIAN SHIRVAN HAND KNOTTED WOOL PRAYER RUG, 3'2'' x 5'4'': This rug has a lively geometric design that includes a central row of two patterns of medallions each with long lines that radiate out into the rest of the field. Botehs or paisleys, diamonds, and flower head shapes fill in the rest of the field. At the top of the mihrab or prayer niche are single botehs that indicate where the hands should be placed when praying. In the center of the top of the niche are two combs. They are symbolic of preparations for prayer. The trefoil guard borders and the design of the main border are also traditional to the Caucasus region.
CONDITION: This rug is quite worn, has had some repairs, and has some color run but it is still an interesting example.
