Some believe that this experience influenced his painting style with dark contours and almost glowing colors. His pieces of clowns and prostitutes were seen to be a moral and social criticism. His pieces became more religious in nature. Before his death he destroyed over 300 pieces of art that he started but believed he would not be able to finish.
