WHISTLER, James Abbott McNeill, (American, 1834-1903): ''Eagle Wharf'' , Etching, one of the Thames set, sight size 6'' x 8.5'', signed in the plate lower margin, framed, 12.5'' x 15'', H V Allison and Company label affixed verso. American born and British based, Whistler was all about ''art for art's sake''. His subtle delicate style was an interesting contrast to his outward persona which was not these things. Later in his career, Whistler began giving his art musically inspired titles and he attributed this influence to a musician friend. In the late 1870s, Whistler painted a portrait of his mother after a model did not show for an appointment. There were very mixed reactions to the austere portrait. At some point his mother began living with him giving him a more respectable appearance, making him more acceptable to patrons.
