PENNELL, Joseph, (American, 1857-1926): ''Little Venice'', sight size 5.25'' x 9.5'', pencil signed lower right, Albert Schwartz label verso circa 1883, painted black frame, 14.5'' x18.25''. Pennell, born to Quaker parents, developed into a painter, illustrator, etcher, lecturer, critic, author, teacher. He was a pupil in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and his unusual ability in etching was recognized by his instructor. In 1881 he went to Europe to illustrate some of the Italian writings of W. D. Howells and subsequently received recognition from Philip Gilbert Hamerton. Pennell illustrated Hamerton's book on a tour along the river Seine and the fame from this earned him many commissions. Pennell's drawings and etchings were numerous and some critics viewed him as without peer in this medium. He did lithographs of the Panama Canal, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. He won numerous awards for his work.
