1001 Click for larger picture WARTHEN, Ferol Sibley, (American, 1890-1986): ''Sunrise'', Woodcut, sight size 21'' x 13'', 24.5'' x 15.25 with margins, pencil signed lower right, titled lower left and dated 1979, #4, exhibition label verso from Provincetown Printmakers Special Exhibition August-October at the Provincetown Heritage Museum, 1979, handwritten card reads ''one block method.watercolor.spoon rubbed-japanese paper each print unique'', framed, 28'' x 19.25''. Spending her summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts gave Warthen the opportunity to be part of the Provincetown Printers art colony. The colony was started in 1915 by B. J. O. Nordfeldt, and other artists who had fled Europe. Her white line woodcuts are done from a single block of wood, with each color done separately and applied in separate applications. This technique was passed on from Nordfeldt to Lazzell to Warthen.
CONDITION: Full margins, 2 creases in right margin running entire length of print, hinge mounted, good colors.

CONDITION: Wide margins, uncut, reverse taped/hinged at the top, several very minor spots, a 9/10.

Provenance, Sotheby's sale 18 May, 2004, Property of a Distinguished Dutch Lady; Christie's sale 2848, December 2010, lot 297.
CONDITION: Older reline, stretcher bar wear, scattered craquelure and spots of inpaint, signature does not fluoresce, several small flecks of loss, needs cleaning and restretching, sold as is.

1045 Click for larger picture WHISTLER, James Abbott McNeill, (American, 1834-1903): ''Eagle Wharf'' , Etching, one of the Thames set, sight size 6'' x 8.5'', signed in the plate lower margin, framed, 12.5'' x 15'', H V Allison and Company label affixed verso. American born and British based, Whistler was all about ''art for art's sake''. His subtle delicate style was an interesting contrast to his outward persona which was not these things. Later in his career, Whistler began giving his art musically inspired titles and he attributed this influence to a musician friend. In the late 1870s, Whistler painted a portrait of his mother after a model did not show for an appointment. There were very mixed reactions to the austere portrait. At some point his mother began living with him giving him a more respectable appearance, making him more acceptable to patrons.
CONDITION: Not examined out of frame, print appears to have been cleaned, sold as is.

1045A Click for larger picture PENNELL, Joseph, (American, 1857-1926): ''Little Venice'', sight size 5.25'' x 9.5'', pencil signed lower right, Albert Schwartz label verso circa 1883, painted black frame, 14.5'' x18.25''. Pennell, born to Quaker parents, developed into a painter, illustrator, etcher, lecturer, critic, author, teacher. He was a pupil in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and his unusual ability in etching was recognized by his instructor. In 1881 he went to Europe to illustrate some of the Italian writings of W. D. Howells and subsequently received recognition from Philip Gilbert Hamerton. Pennell illustrated Hamerton's book on a tour along the river Seine and the fame from this earned him many commissions. Pennell's drawings and etchings were numerous and some critics viewed him as without peer in this medium. He did lithographs of the Panama Canal, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. He won numerous awards for his work.
CONDITION: Toning around the margins, scattered spotting, not examined out of frame, sold as is.
