DUBUFFET, Jean, (French, 1901-1985): ''L'Homme a la Casquette'', Lithograph, sight size 21'' x 6.5'', pencil signed lower right and dated '53, numbered 19/20 lower left and titled. Original Pace Gallery label affixed verso. Fine silver gilt framing, 31.25'' x 15.75''. Full size of print with margins 26'' x 12.5''. Dubuffet started painting and then gave up because he felt as though he was imitating his contemporaries. Before WWII, he began painting again, rejecting Europe's art traditions as he became the leader of the Art Brut movement. This movement believed that worthwhile art had to be spontaneous and the most spontaneous were children and mental patients; he believed art had much to do with madness.
CONDITION: Hinge mounted with tape, overall browning, margins exhibit sporadic staining, glue remnants, several areas of minimum paper loss due to former extraction of print from original mounting. Not laid, sold as is.
