CHAGALL, Marc, (French, 1887-1985): ''La Crucifixion'', Lithograph on Arches Paper, sight size 21.75'' x 29.5'', pencil signed lower right, numbered 10/30 lower left, vintage silver gilt frame, 26.75'' x 35 3/4''. Chagall was a very intelligent artist with great sympathy for man's suffering. His Jewish family sheltered him and were reluctant to send him to study art, eventually in St Petersburg. All things Russian were a constant theme throughout his artistic life. Chagall was sponsored to study in Paris and he lived on the same floor of the boarding house as other Jews. He is heralded as one of the founding fathers of surrealism. He used color for emotional effect. When France fell during the war, Chagall was briefly imprisoned and then, with the help of a friend, sailed to NYC with his family. After the war and the death of his wife, he moved back to France which he loved so much.
