18TH CENTURY POLYCHROME DECORATED SHRANK: Dated 1778. This armoire, or schrank as it is called in Germany. It came from Stein, a small village in the county of Appenzell, Switzerland. With the exception of some restoration of the crown & bottom moldings, this piece remains in its original state. It is representative of country folks furniture used widely in the late 1700's and 1800's in Switzerland, southern Germany, & Austria. Similar pieces were brought by immigrants to Pennsylvania (Pennsylvania Dutch). This armoire was imported into the U.S. by the Country Shop in 1970, and it was acquired by Mr. & Mrs. L.W. CONDITION: Magnet added to left door. Age cracks, loss at top left moulding, wear commensurate with age and use.
