
SAILOR'S WOOLWORK ''WOOLIE'' of THE FLYING CLOUD: Depicting the clipper ship, ''The Flying Cloud'' launched in 1851. The history of the flying cloud accompanies this piece, published in the Woman's Home Companion Service Bureau, the Crowell Publishing Company, 250 Park Avenue, New York. Worked in wool on a fine linen ground, using a variety of stitches including button hole, padded and long and short stitches. ''Woolies'' are embroidered ship portraits sewn while at sea and more often made by a sailor who was accomplished in sewing and other textile skills needed to repair sails and mend clothing. A large example in excellent condition, measuring 32'' x 20'', framed under glass, 23 3/4'' x 35'' overall.
