
MAGNIFICENT SILK NEEDLEWORK DEPICTING A SCENE FROM FAUST: Ca late 1700's or early 1800's. An extremely rare and important silk needlework. The entire canvas is worked in silk thread with the exception of the skin tones which are in water color. First time offered on the open market. The setting is of a garden scene with Marguerite leaning from a balcony in conversation with Faust. Mephistopheles in his usual red suit is as an onlooker. There is an open doorway surrounded with colorful flowers. Through the arched gate is a path leading to a castle. A wide variety of colors are used and still very vivid. The entire needlework is in excellent condition and retains the sheen of the silk thread. Embroidery itself is 17 1/2'' x 17 3/4'', Framed under glass, overall dimensions 24.50'' x 24.50''.
