BALCHEN, Bernt, (American, 1899-?): Greenland, W/C, signed lower right, dated February, 1951, pencil description verso, unframed. Balchen was most famous for being the first man to fly over both the North and South Pole, worked extensively with Commander Richard Byrd, eventually retiring as a Colonel, after having performed many heroic rescue missions on the Greenland Icecap. He was also a noted watercolorist, exhibiting 3 times at the Grand Central Art Galleries.
