
CIANI, Vittorio, (Italian/American, 1858-1908): Wood Nymph with Pan Flute, Marble, 22'', incised signature verso, dated 1885. Ciani was born in Florence, Italy, studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Rome at 12, under Professor Mazzini. Upon graduation, he entered the studio of Monteverdi. In 1889 married an American, and opened a studio in New York. He was commissioned to do several very important works for such patrons as The Vanderbilts, Pabst Theatre in Milwaukee, and a commission by the U.S. government for a bust of George Clinton, currently residing in the Vice-Presidential Bust Collection. In 1897, Ciani received the cross of the Crown of Italy for historic merit from King Humbert. Est. $5000/8000**
