Octavo, original calf bearing the gilt stamped arms of the Dauphin front and rear, gilt decorated spine, calf label, marbled edges, marbled endpapers, xiii, 432, (v) pp. Engraved frontis, decorative head and tail pieces. This copy bears the armorial bookplate of collector and philanthropist Grace Whitney Hoff. The title Dauphin, or roughly viewed as the ''Son of France'' was carried by the heir apparent to the French throne. Louis, Dauphin of France (1729-1795 was the only surviving son of Louis XV and Queen Marie Leszczynska. Although he died before ascending to the throne, three of his sons became King, Louis XVI, Louis XVIII and Charles X.
