IMPORTANT ANDREW JOHNSON SIGNED MILITARY COMMISSION: 1867 commission of George Mallery to Brevet Major in the US Army, signed by Andrew Johnson and Edwin M. Stanton. Mallery saw Civil War service in Pennsylvania Volunteer force where he obtained rank of Colonel, and was injured at Peach Orchard, Virginia, captured and sent to Libby prison near Richmond. After the war Mallery enlisted in the regulation Army as a Captain. After the Army Mallery wrote an important ethnological book ''Sign Language Among North American Indians Compared to Other People and Deaf-Mutes''. 19 1/4'' x 16''.
