
WOMEN'S MENDE HELMET MASK FROM SIERRA LEONE: The women's Sande society found in Liberia and Sierra Leone have a tradition of initiating girls into womanhood. On this occasion the leaders/mentors wear a wooden helmet mask that embodies sowei - the water spirit and guardian deity. This is the only occasion where women can wear masks. Measures approximately 27'' h.
