33 | OIL/BOARD OF JAN BOCKELSEN OF LEIDEN AFTER AN ETCHING DONE IN 1536 BY HEINRICH ALDEGREVER: 19'' x 14 1/2'', gilded and carved frame with overpaint, 26 1/2'' x 22''. Bockelson was the illegitimate son of a Dutch mayor, and a tailor's apprentice by trade. Some accounts have him setting up the King of Munster in order to gain the throne himself. He is best known for a law John passed stating that any unmarried woman must accept the first or any requests for a husband, with the result that men competed to acquire the most wives. CONDITION: Cracklure and paint loss throughout. |
