PORTRAIT OF AN EARLY AMERICAN GENTLEMAN: OIL/Canvas, 21 1/2'' x 27'' framed 25 1/2'' x 31'', This painting depicts a gentleman in the costume of the late 18th to early 19th century. Attached to the canvas and clearly visible at the rear are parts of pages from a Dutch newspaper, one article of which contains the year date 1804. The Dutch were active in the Colonies, particularly in and around New York and New Jersey, Manhattan island having been purchased by the Dutch from the Native Americans. It is possible, therefore, that this sitter commissioned Dutch trained artist to paint his portrait. CONDITION: The canvas is in stable condition; it was damaged and professionally repaired, the four areas clearly visible from the back. |
