1373 Click for larger picture CHAVEZ, Margaret Herrera, (Mexican American 1912-1992): ''Rodriguez and His Pal'', Watercolor on woven paper, Sight size 19 1/2'' x 28'', framed 26 1/2'' x 34''. Margaret Herrera (Chavez) received her art degree in 1953 from Highlands University which included study in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. She created fervently, traveled extensively, and figured prominently in many artistic and educational organizations including the National League of American Pen Women. She was one of a handful of known and documented Nuevo Mexicana artists working in New Mexico from the 1950's through the 1960's. Herrera's works have been exhibited in several New Mexico museums and in galleries in Texas, Florida, New York, Missouri and at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. A collection of archival material from the artist's private papers, including correspondence, exhibit listings, inventories of art, and other ephemera is housed in the Nation Hispanic Cultural Center History and Literary Arts Department archive in Albuquerque, NM. 250
