11 | MUSEUM QUALITY 17th C EARLY SPANISH VARGUENO: The piece is constructed of Honduras mahogany, walnut, satinwood and oak. Drawer pulls are in the form of the scallop shells, signifying the owner was a member of a religious pilgrimage (Children's Crusade). The carved fronts of the interior drawers and cupboards are marvels of miniature architectural design. Carved bone pilasters and crosses are inlaid with ebony. Especially interesting are the tiny illusionary doors that are actually drawers. These, with columns and cornices, simulate entrances to buildings. Original hand wrought filigree hardware. Later added, yet 19th C antique spiral turned base. Consignor states her father acquired the desk from the Royal Palms Hotel in Arizona, once the home of the author Thomas Cooke. The desk belonged to Cooke before ownership transferred to the hotel. Desk: 24 1/2''h x 39''w x 17''d. Overall height 58 1/4'', 22'' depth of foot. Please call for condition. | 8500 | |
