1948 RCA ''THE BERKSHIRE'' BREAKFRONT PROJECTION TV CABINET: Developed by RCA, made by Baker, it housed AM, FM, phonograph, and a projection television. The electronics have been removed from this cabinet and a faux drawer front replaces them....... Hazeltine Corporation Mahogany cabinet made for an RCA Victor Festival Series #1026, Model Berkshire Range entertainment center. Provenance indicates that this cabinet once belonged to Joseph Roessler, a prominent Cincinnati businessman in the 40's, is 1 of only 1000 ever made. Consignor Provenance states: ''This item was purchased around 1947-1948 from the Hazeltine Corporation, and was originally used as an entertainment center, having had a 25'' projection television, a 78RPM record player, and a high band radio. It was a RCA Victor Series #1026, Festival Series, Model Berkshire Range. I spoke with a curator of RCA history, located I believe in Princeton (and I think associated with the University), and he told me that this was the ''top,top, top of the line'', less than 1,000 were every produced, and each was custom made by the finest Italian-American furniture makers available at the time - who was involved from the picking of the trees onward. According to him, it is solid Mahogany. He said ''your Uncle must have been a very important man, because at the time very, very few could afford or have access to this item''. He said ''your uncle was in very good company'', as the Shah of Iran owned this piece of furniture, as did Serge Koussevitsky, a prominent composer and at the time, conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. I have an article about this piece, with a picture of Serge Koussevitsky sitting by his Breakfront, if which I will send separately. Since sometime in the late 50's or early 60's, it has been used as a dining room breakfront, having had the projection television, record player and radio removed. There are a couple of shelves and a drawer that appear to have been added, that are not mahogany, but blend well. The piece is in excellent condition and is very impressive when viewing. All the glass cabinets open, as do the two doors on each bottom end. However, the front lateral drawers are false drawers, and do not open. The piece measures 6 feet wide, 91'' tall, 16'' deep at the glass cabinet area, 20'' deep at the cabinet ledge, and 22'' deep at the front center ledge''.
