Broken arch pediment with applied rosettes, spire finial, parquetry inlay. Mahogany case with beveled glass windows. Mixed metal face with pierced center, applied Roman numerals, moon phase dial. 9 brass tube with 3 chimes and silent, ornate pendulum with faux mercury weights. Overall measures 86 1/2'' h. x 24 3/4'' x 15''.

1189 Click for larger picture IMPORTANT THEODOR & JOHANN DE BRY GRAND VOYAGES VOLUME 5: From the original 1995 Early American History Auctions catalog: '' Theodor De Bry & Johann Theodor De Bry, 'Americae Das Funffte Buch, Vol Schoner Unerhorter Historien, Aus Dem Andern Theil Joanis Benzonis Von Meylandt Gezogen...(Great Voyages, Part V)', Franckfurt am Mayn: Dieterich de Bry (1595). 13 1/4'' x 9 1/4''. Fifth volume of the first German edition of De Bry's ''Great Voyages'', containing Girolamo Benzoni's history of the early European settlements in American, based on his 14 years of travels in the New World. First published in Italian in 1565, at the time of publication it was the first such history from other than Spanish sources. There is a double-page copper engraved map of the central/western portion of Mexico proper, ''Hispanie Novae Sive Magnae, Recens Et Vera Descriptio, 1595'', 13'' x 9 1/2'', with two embellished cartouches (Indians, weapons, ornaments), and vignettes of natives, buffalo (''Indian cows''), canoes, and sailing ships. There are two title page and 18 of 22 copper-engraved plates, with letterpress text in the lower portions. The 18 plates (XIX-XXII are missing) show the conquest, enslavement, and torture of the natives, battles between the Spanish and French, etc. There is also a portrait of Columbus on page 3.
CONDITION: It is trimmed to the neat line and is moderately soiled, however attractive. Some internal soiling, corners are worn, some rough outer edges to the selvage, and there are occasional minor tears, including pages 107-8. Pages 95-104 are lacking and there are some repairs to first title page; wrappers are old and plant and front one is separated from body. Sold with all faults.

An ornamental shield with three stars, a dove perched atop a crown, surrounded by flowers; under the shield is the motto, ''Existus Acta Probat'', and under that, ''George Washington'', lightly toned. Very Scarce''. On chained paper with partial ''BANKS'' watermark upper left corner.

Typed letter reads ''Dear Commander, May I wish all kinds of good luck to the MCB Ten. I am proud to be an honorary member of your Battalion; and I don't know whether it's fortunate or unfortunate, but my E. T. A. will not allow me quick flight in your direction. Seriously, as one of about two hundred million Americans, thank your men for what they are doing. Sincerely, John Wayne''. Autographed in pen, on his stationary. Please note while we believe this signature to be his, the possibility exists it is secretarial. Framed and matted, measures 13 1/4'' x 10 1/4''.

Transferware set marked Societe Ceramique Maestricht, Made in Holland. Pitcher 11 1/2'' x 11 1/2'' h., bowl measures 5'' h. x 15 3/4''.

Made out to Daniel Phoenix as Secretary, Arch(ibald) Gracie as President. Gracie is most famous for his home becoming 'Gracie Mansion', future home of the governors of NY, which still carrie his namesake. Large sguiggly Ink Cancel across the face, as well as Slash Cancel with some ink affecting Gracie's signature at bottom. A most unusual item for a huge amount of money, made out the the New York Insurance Company for $35,000 in 1797''. 6'' x 3''. 100

Signed on the reverse and anointed by Oliver Wolcott Jr. A rare reference to the earl American silk industry''.

Text accompanying photo reads ''Watch your credit....(New York Bureau) I 56064 - Copyright 1928 by P & A Photos. Ruth Snyder's Death Pictured! This is perhaps the most remarkable exclusive picture in the history of criminology. It shows the actual scene in the Sing Sing Death House as the lethal current surged through Ruth Snyder's body at 11:06 P. M. on the night of Jan. 12th. Her helmeted head is stiffened in death, her face masked and electrode strapped to her bare right leg. The autopsy table on which her body was removed is beside her. This picture is the first Sing Sing execution picture and the first of a Woman's electrocution.'' Marked on the back with copyright warnings. 8 1/2'' x 6 1/2''.
