344 Click for larger picture LOT OF 3 NATIVE AMERICAN RUGS: 1) American Navajo hand woven wool rug, 4' 5'' x 6' 4''. This fine example of pre-World War II native weaving uses both natural and dyed wool with a field crowded with different design motifs including what we now call Swastikas' in gray on a red ground. These designs have also been referred to as pinwheels and are an ancient symbol for eternity, not the evil connotation from war time. The stepped black lines have sometimes been linked with lightning bolts, or mountains or rivers. The diamond edge border in red, black and white tell us that this is a 20th century weaving as most earlier rugs had no borders. Condition is very good. 2) This lot consists of four hand woven wool bands, 20'' wide x 8' 10''. These bands were all woven on the same loom by the same person with the intent to be joined together to make one large rug/blanket. The dramatic black and red bands and the diamond medallion in the center can be lined up to match very well, although the lengths of the bands vary. The overall effect is powerful. There is some moth damage on each of the bands, but no current activity. 3) American Navajo hand woven wool rug, 2' 8'' x 3' 7''. This simple mid 20th century rug has design of radiating diamonds in black, red, and gray, on an ivory field, bordered by a brown-black edge. There are some stains and some color runs. Sold as a lot. 550
