Montiel attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Sevilla, Spain in 1945. He went on to receive a scholarship known as ''Painters Paular'' to attend the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. Later in his career, Montiel and 5 other artists then began a new artistic movement known as ''The Italico Group'' which included artists such as Ricardo Milla and Armando del Rio Llavona.
