53 | SAMPLER WROUGHT BY ELIZABETH COOKS AGED 7 YEARS: This a very tender age to be capable of such fine needlework. What makes this sampler unique is the fact that Jane cut out the date, which is often done when the child is older and does not want to reveal her age. The most often method used was to pull out some of the stitches of the year in which the sampler was wrought. Worked in silk thread in just about every color. Upper portion worked in upper case alphabet and one row of numbers from 1 to 22. Two rows of upper case alphabet worked in algerian eye. Several ornate dividing lines through the central section with pious verse '' Give God thy Great Creator homage due consider first thy Business then pursue, Converse with honest Men let such be dear, And self conceitedness in naught appear''. Flowering plants on each side, all enclosed in a truncated variated border including various flowers and 8 point stars. There is one small section below the pine tree on the right with background thread loss, also a small section in the upper central section near a dividing line. Slight loss of fabric on left edge of sampler. For stabilization the sampler has been sparingly stitched to a background fabric. Framed under glass, the frame is 22 1/2'' x 18'' 1/2''. Silk petit point on fine gauze, sometimes referred to as tiffany cloth, using both cross and tent stitch. Dividing bands using a variety of stitches. Vivid shades of green, red, yellow, brown, black, teal and tan. Alphabet in upper case script and arabic. One row of lower case alphabet and numbers 1 to 4. Lower portion with a green knoll and a variety of flowering plants and strawberries. The whole being in excellent condition. 59 | GEORGE WASHINGTON MEMORIAL SAMPLER: Signed in thread ''Josephine Wolfs work aged 10 years March th 19, 1834''. Silk on linen ground worked in cross stitch. Centering a tomb with square plinth, topped with large urn. The inscription reads: ''To The memory of Washington, born feb 12th, 1732, Died Dec the 14th 1800. The year of death is incorrect which adds to the charm of the sampler. All-over pattern of various large flowers and leaves which forms the wide border. there is some loss of linen fabric, namely at the bottom. Has been stitched to a background fabric in order to stabilize the sampler. Josephine Wolf is a descendent of a John Wolf who was an aide to General Washington during the revolutionary war. Embroidery needlework and water color on silk ground using both silk and wool thread in a variety of needlework stitches including stump work, short and long stitch, and seed stitch. Depicting the Boston fishing lady and three companions, the seated lady in red holds a small baby. Facial features and fish in the basket are painted in water color, as is the sky. Finely executed with all colors vivid and no loss of color and stitches. The silk is fragile and there is some loss of the silk background fabric in the upper section of the sky. The history of the flying cloud accompanies this piece, published in the Woman's Home Companion Service Bureau, the Crowell Publishing Company, 250 Park Avenue, New York. Worked in wool on a fine linen ground, using a variety of stitches including button hole, padded and long and short stitches. ''Woolies'' are embroidered ship portraits sewn while at sea and more often made by a sailor who was accomplished in sewing and other textile skills needed to repair sails and mend clothing. 89 | MAGNIFICENT SILK NEEDLEWORK DEPICTING A SCENE FROM FAUST: Ca late 1700's or early 1800's. An extremely rare and important silk needlework. The entire canvas is worked in silk thread with the exception of the skin tones which are in water color. First time offered on the open market. The setting is of a garden scene with Marguerite leaning from a balcony in conversation with Faust. Mephistopheles in his usual red suit is as an onlooker. There is an open doorway surrounded with colorful flowers. Through the arched gate is a path leading to a castle. A wide variety of colors are used and still very vivid. The entire needlework is in excellent condition and retains the sheen of the silk thread.
