1 | IVES KEYWIND CLOCKWORK BOXERS CA. 1870'S: Two cloth dressed Negro men with wooden heads and hands, iron legs and shoes. One of the gents has glass eyes, the other has painted eyes. The men are standing on a golden oak wooden box that conceals the clock works. 11 1/2'' x 8 1/2'' x 5'' overall. The piece is wound tightly and when opened not only was what seemed to be the original key found inside, the works were as clean as the day they were made. With a little prodding both men boxed but would not cycle continuously. This piece is as though it came out of a time capsule! Please see additional photos. | 5000 | |

47 | IMPORTANT NEW JERSEY HOUSE SAMPLER: Wrought by ''Sara Van Liew born November 14, 1804. This is a rare find as it was privately purchased from a descendent in the family and has never been on the open market. Along with the family provenance, which dates to 1572, there also is a drawing of the family crest. The Van Liew family were French Huguenots and fled France after the St. Bartholomew massacre. They fled to Belgium, eventually migrating to America. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground using Algerian eye, satin stitch, cross stitch and a variety of other stitches. Alphabet is in upper case and lowercase, numbers 1 to 10 in cross stitch. Large upper case alphabet worked in Algerian eye. signed ''Sara Van Liew was born november 14 1804. this I have done for you to see what care my parents took of me under the care of mary bellamy''. The initials of the Van Liew family are also listed. Large storied house with three chimneys, also included is large pots with flowers, birds, hearts and an arcaded strawberry border. The divider lines themselves are a sampling of many stitches. It was also worked under the care of Mary Bellamy. Sight size 19'' x 15 1/4''. Framed under glass, 22'' x 18'' overall. An almost identical sampler is shown on page 113 in Stephen and Carol Huber's book ''Samplers and how to Compare Values'' with estimated value from $18.000 to $20,000. | 5750 | |
48 | SILK AND HOMESPUN SAMPLER DATED 1795: Wrought by Mattilda Van Liew, undoubtedly a relative of Sara Van Liew whose sampler lot 47 is in this collection. This is a much simpler and earlier sampler worked in silk in cross stitch on homespun in colors of green, brown, black tan and blue. All upper case alphabet and numbers 1 to 10. ''Mattilda Van Liew Sampler Born October XX. 17 on one line, the rest of the date 95 is at the end of the last line. This occurred quite frequently in the very early school girl samplers.
