Hand painted center medallion with portrait of a young beauty, cobalt and light blue ground near base. Blue beehive mark with over stamp, marked ''Unschuld, dec : 283, Depose'' and other marks. Impressed 5508 K. Measures 9 1/4'' h. x 5 1/4''.
CONDITION: Small chip repair on one handle.

Provenance as follows. From Shirley Temple Black to Mrs. Henrietta Murdock (with signed autographed picture to Mrs. Murdock) to Mr. & Mrs. Tom Bothers to current consignor. Henrietta Murdock was the Interior Decorator Editor of the Ladies Home Journal from 1936-1956. Overall measures 34 1/4'' h. x 86'' x 25 1/4''.
CONDITION: Notched out section at each end of the top at back, may have had a backsplash at some point. Age splits, other wear consistent with age and use.

Bezel ring has built in key winds. Embossed brass bezel, slate dial with incised Roman numerals, marked Theodore B. Starr, New York. French 8 day time and strike movement. Reputedly purchased as a deaccession from the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. Overall measures 19 1/2'' h. x 14'' x 8 1/2''.
CONDITION: Case with spotting and could use a proper cleaning, in need of a suspension spring, we cannot determine full functionality. Shippers note approx. 80 lbs.

Torpedo weights, brass pendulum, time and strike movement. Overall excluding pendulum measures 16 1/4'' h. x 11'' x 6 1/2''.

1029 Click for larger picture APPROX 15-35 YR OLD TURKISH HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 8' X 10'6'': The variegated salmon colored field has palmettes, flower heads, and leaves scattered over the field in an open design that is loosely linked by vines. The yellow, beige, and red colors used in the fields motifs are also found in the pale yellow ground main border and guard borders.

CONDITION: Not currently in working order. Wear is consistent with age and use.

1057A   APPROX 25-50 YR OLD PERSIAN HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 9'7'' X 12'10'': Approx 25-50 yr old Persian hand knotted wool rug, 9.7 x 12.10. This lively, vibrant room -size rug has a large diamond shaped white, blue, and red central medallion with spandrels at either end, all resting on an open red diamond shaped field. White ground corners complete the field. The medallion and the corners have a Herati repeating pattern with curving leaves around some flowers and diamond shaped lines around others. The red ground of the main border matches the red of the field and both are flanked by the pale yellow and light blue guard borders.
CONDITION: There is visible wear and the sides need some attention, but the overall look is good.

1064 Click for larger picture APPROX 20-40 YR OLD PERSIAN ISPHAHAN HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 8'4'' x 11'6'': This attractive rug has a traditional Persian design with a large central medallion with a smaller center pattern that radiates out to larger palmettes which form the outer edge of the medallion. At either end there are spandrels that look like lamps or vases suspended from the central medallion and just below each of them is a large budding flower. The rest of the field is densely covered with large curving leaves, sprays of flowers, and palmettes. The mostly lighter colors used in the motifs really stand out on the deep blue field.
CONDITION: Mostly good but the sides need a little attention.
1064A   APPROX 20-45 YR OLD TURKISH HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 5'4'' X 8''10'': This rug has a dramatic look to it with its open dark blue field with only the rust and beige white outlined medallion with spandrels in the center. The corners of the field are white and aqua with pink and blue outlines. They match the guard borders in color as the main borders colors link it to the main part of the field.
CONDITION: Good.

There are spandrels suspended from either end of the medallion as well as a network of medium blue vines that go out from the edge of the medallion in all directions. These link up with the leaves and flowers in the field. The ivory & rust corners and the blue ground main border finish the overall pattern of the rug.

The corners of the field are like portions of the central medallion but in slightly different colors. Throughout the rug white silk is used to highlight the motifs. The variegated blue field has a repeating alternating pattern of red/orange and white botehs or paisleys and a motif that includes a combination of flowers and small botehs in pale blue, white and red/orange . The borders are all done in patterns of traditional designs found in older rugs using the same colors as the field.

The deep blue field is covered with a profusion of many types, colors, and sizes of flowers laid out in the complex traditional pattern. The various flowers and leaves are in colors that include pink, red, shades of blue, white and pale green and are linked by vines. The light blue guard borders around the red ground main border are also filled with a variety of flowers.

The fields ground color changes from red to beige to pink and back to beige again. Although there are only about three motifs that are repeated again and again over the field, some are very clearly drawn and completed while others are very sketchy and seem incomplete. All these differences add to the charm and interest of this naive tribal rug.

Black outlining helps to further distinguish the design and the one lobe of colors near the center of the piece. This would be an interesting addition to a Moderne setting.
