MEURER, Charles, (German, 1865-1955): Painting of a Seated Woman Wearing a Hat, Oil/Canvas, 20'' x12'', estate stamp verso, temporary frame, 22.5'' x 15''. Meurer was born in Germany of American parents, and is noted for his trompe l'oeil painting style. He continued to paint after both of his legs were amputated. As a youth and beginning artist, he was commissioned by the editor of a newspaper to paint a still life incorporating the front page of the paper with a figure surrounded by books and other objects of editorial wisdom. Meurer used this theme in many subsequent paintings which was later described as editorial-sanctum still life, something that emphasizes with appropriate objects authority (books), industry (pen and inkwell) and respectability (money). He studied art with Frank Duveneck in Cincinnati and then went to Paris and Lyon for further study in France. He was converted to trompe l'oeil painting when he saw the work of Michael Harnett. CONDITION: Abrasion in lower margin, several scattered flecks of paint loss, sold as is. |
