APPROX. 25-45 YR OLD PERSIAN HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 10' x 12'11'': A pretty medallion within a medallion done in shades of blue, yellow, red, and white is the centerpiece of the field. Spandrels extend from either end and radiating out from the medallion are palmettes. The design of palmettes continues throughout the field interspersed with leaves and flowers all linked by vines. The four corners are like quarters of the central medallion. The blue/black field and the main border are edged by several medium blue colored guard borders. CONDITION: Good condition but with some visible areas of wear. |

CHAGALL, Marc, (French, 1887-1985): ''La Crucifixion'', Lithograph on Arches Paper, sight size 21.75'' x 29.5'', pencil signed lower right, numbered 10/30 lower left, vintage silver gilt frame, 26.75'' x 35 3/4''. Chagall was a very intelligent artist with great sympathy for man's suffering. His Jewish family sheltered him and were reluctant to send him to study art, eventually in St Petersburg. All things Russian were a constant theme throughout his artistic life. Chagall was sponsored to study in Paris and he lived on the same floor of the boarding house as other Jews. He is heralded as one of the founding fathers of surrealism. He used color for emotional effect. When France fell during the war, Chagall was briefly imprisoned and then, with the help of a friend, sailed to NYC with his family. After the war and the death of his wife, he moved back to France which he loved so much. CONDITION: Overall toning/pale darkening of paper, frame shows wear, not examined out of frame, sold as is. |

The red/rust field has white lobed quarters of the central medallion design in its corners. The rug's design is well drawn and executed and the colors are well balanced.
