1051 Click for larger picture CARVED WOODEN MEPHISTOPHELES AND MARGARETTA DUAL SIDED SCULPTURE: Museum quality carved wooden dual sided sculpture depicting a nonchalant sneering Mephistopheles and, on the reverse, a demure Margaretta, the two main characters in Goethe's play ''Faust'', first published in 1808. A seemingly identical sculpture resides in one of the largest museums in the world, the Salar Jung Museum in Darushifa, India. it is reportedly is one of the most photographed items in the museum. This amazing work of art was purchased at the Biennial Antiques and Arts Festival in London, England for $23,000.00. 67 1/2'' h. approx. 101.5lbs. CONDITION: Tip of Margaretta's foot has separated from the piece. Several noticeable age cracks throughout sculpture; none that appear to be risking the integrity of the piece.

CONDITION: Some of the frames have missing pieces; this lot is sold AS IS.
