Nichols was the descendant of two generations of career Army officers. He attended West Point and served 2 years in the Army Airborne before enrolling in the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL and immersing himself in painting. Vincent was an artist who was known for his marine painting. He was a graduate of the New England School of Art and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
