McLEOD, J., (Jamaican, 20th C): ''Enciente'', Carved Native Guango Wood, signed lower left thigh and under the base ''J. McLeod'', dated 1965 Jamaica, 23''h, sits on a painted wood plinth, 26'' overall. This artist has had a similar carving on exhibit at the National Gallery of Jamaica. While they have no biographical information available for us they believe it is ''likely that he was a student of the English sculptor Bill Broome who taught at the Jamaica School of Art in the mid 1960s and whose students produced sculptures that are similar in style and concept.'' https://nationalgalleryofjamaica.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/j-mcleod-mother-and-child-for-web.jpg CONDITION: Sculpture wood has natural fissures, a few have been filled. STUBER, Dedrick Brands, (American, 1878-1954): Trees in Twilight, Oil/Board, 20'' x 24'', signed lower right, gesso frame 25'' x 29'', original label affixed verso from Daniel Rees. Stuber was primarily a painter of pastoral scenes as well as marine and mountain scenes. New York City born, he moved to California in 1920 and became a ''plein air'' painter of California landscape scenes which he liked to do at sunrise. CONDITION: Needs cleaning, frame has damage, sold as is. |

BINDER, Jacob (Russian, 1887-1984): Woman in Red Dress with Pearls, Oil/Canvas, 43.5'' x 32.5'', signed lower left, dated 1965, custom carved and gilded impressionist frame, 48'' x 36.5''. Portrait of a Woman, Oil/Canvas. A household name in the 1920's, Binder came to fame with his work ''The Old Talmudist''. This is one of the few pieces that was in the permanent collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. As a devout Jewish man, many of Binder's work consisted of murals of Rabbi's and other higher up members of the Hebrew community. CONDITION: Scattered craquelure, stretcher bar wear, several abrasions with paint loss, frame shows very minor wear, tear in lower margin, sold as is. |
