Caption with the accompanying cartoon from the New Yorker reads ''I don't know how you feel, but I hate these company outings''. There are some slight variances from this artwork and the actual one in the New Yorker, this may be an alternate version or a study for the one used for the New Yorker. 1358 Click for larger picture BUENAVENTURA, Cesar, (Filipino, 1919-1983): Nocturnal Shoreline Scene with Lanterns and Boats, Oil/Canvas, 16'' x 20'', signed lower right, dated 1971, original frame 22'' x 26''. Quite an elusive, yet masterful artist, Buenaventura didn't find fame until after his demise. Author Jane Stangl Alvero assembled his extensive, diverse portfolio into the first public showing of his works in a book titled ''Filipino Painter, Cesar Buenaventura: His Life and Works''.
CONDITION: Needs cleaning, very minor craquelure, frame shows minor wear, sold as is.

Haruyo came under the tutelage of Master Husuki at an early age and trained for many years as a Kimono painter. Her work has been described as a contemporary representation of Ukiyo-e. 275

1370 Click for larger picture ROUAULT, George, (French, 1871-1958): Portrait of a Woman, Aquatint/Etching, size with margins 25.5'' x 19.75'', signed lower right, signed in the plate lower left and dated '23. Impression size is 22'' x 17''. Born into a poor family, Rouault became a glass maker at age 14. Some believe that this experience influenced his painting style with dark contours and almost glowing colors. His pieces of clowns and prostitutes were seen to be a moral and social criticism. His pieces became more religious in nature. Before his death he destroyed over 300 pieces of art that he started but believed he would not be able to finish.
CONDITION: Unframed, staining in lower left margin from moisture, non acid free tape burn in margins, overall toning, sold as is.
