1046A Click for larger picture APPROX. 30-45 YR OLD CHINESE FRENCH AUBUSSON DESIGN HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 7'8'' x 10': This rug has a striking appearance with its black background setting off the pastel Aubusson floral design. A large rounded beige / ivory central medallion has a center of pastel flowers in rose, green, yellow, and pale pink. Garlands of the same type flowers go all around the field along with smaller garlands of leaves in the same colors. A wide ''broken'' border and seemingly silk highlights accent this lovely rug. There is a letter at one end inscribed in the black edge of the rug, a maker's mark perhaps. Condition is good with wear consistent with age. 300

1064A Click for larger picture APPROX. 45-65 YR OLD PERSIAN KASHAN PICTORIAL HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUNNER, 2'6'' x 10': This rug has an unusual pictorial format that starts with a blue sky with clouds over a tall waterfall that becomes a river that flows the length of the runner. On islands or outcroppings of land on either side are found a variety of animals from all over the world. These include a polar bear, penguins, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, a lion, tiger, and leopard and more. The animal's images were probably derived from photos or books and their scale of size doesn't match the true size of the animals, but it adds to the charm of the rug.
CONDITION: Condition is good for its age but with some visible shading and stains.

The dark aqua field is covered with small geometric shaped motifs in red, ivory, dark blue, and pink that repeat over and over. There are six guard borders and a main border whose design is found on Genge and Karabagh Caucasian rugs. This is a good rug for those who like the geometric Caucasian look and need a large rug.
CONDITION: There is some shading, there are some areas of visible wear, there is a stain in one corner, the rug has been re-fringed and the fringe is coming away at one end.

The deep blue field has double bands of other colors that create double diamond medallions, four over the length of the rug. The two center diamonds have a stylized yet very simple tree of life motif. Other birds are found tucked into the foliage here and there over the field. The dark blue border has deer, birds, and other animals placed between various plants /trees.

Nicolaides ran away from home to become an artist. He travelled to New York where he studied at the Art Students League with John Sloan and George Bridgman. During WWI, he became one of the first American camouflage artists and also worked on contour maps.
