DUBUFFET, Jean, (French, 1901-1985): ''L'Homme a la Casquette'', Lithograph, sight size 21'' x 6.5'', pencil signed lower right and dated '53, numbered 19/20 lower left and titled. Original Pace Gallery label affixed verso. Fine silver gilt framing, 31.25'' x 15.75''. Full size of print with margins 26'' x 12.5''. Dubuffet started painting and then gave up because he felt as though he was imitating his contemporaries. Before WWII, he began painting again, rejecting Europe's art traditions as he became the leader of the Art Brut movement. This movement believed that worthwhile art had to be spontaneous and the most spontaneous were children and mental patients; he believed art had much to do with madness. CONDITION: Hinge mounted with tape, overall browning, margins exhibit sporadic staining, glue remnants, several areas of minimum paper loss due to former extraction of print from original mounting. Not laid, sold as is. |

Yoshida was a leader in the new print movement (shin hanga) and was the only one to sign and title his work in English. He worked as a painter until his 40s when he became interested in woodblocks. He worked with Watanabe for a few years and became very involved in the printing process. Eventually he started his own print shop. Yoshida was an avid mountain climber and became known for his Alpine scenes. Miro studied at the Barcelona Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Gali and eventually moved to Paris. There he became friends with Picasso, Hemingway, Klee and Ernst and was accepted as a Surrealist. In his 70's he produced bronze and in his 80's he worked with Royo who created tapestries. Miro transformed them from appreciated folk art to masterpieces by applying different materials and techniques.
