Lajos Kossuth was a Hungarian lawyer, journalist, politician and Governor-President of the Kingdom of Hungary during the revolution of 1848-49. Lajos gave his sister, Zsuzsanna, the responsibility to organize the medical military system in Hungary. She was considered a freedom fighter. Tornai pursued a formal education and studied under the likes of Hans Makart and Gyula Bencz£r; Makart had a great influence on him. His early paintings featured genre scenes which changed greatly as he traveled. He would often design frames to compliment his artwork.
