RAPHAEL, Joseph, (American, 1869-1950): Clearing in a Birch Forest, Oil/Masonite, 24'' x 19.5'', titled verso Epping Forest, signed lower right, framed, 27.5'' x 23.25''. Raphael studied at the Beaux Artes in Belgium and the Academie Julian. Overtime, his style evlolved using broader and freer brushstrokes similar to the post-Impressionist style. He was married and his family grew; they became the subjects of some of his pieces. Raphael and his family lived in Holland until WWII threatened at which time they moved to San Francisco. He was a skilled printmaker and produced numerous etchings and wood cuts. CONDITION: Several flecks of loss, sold as is. |
