1011 Click for larger picture APPROX. 35-45 YR OLD PERSIAN ''KASHMAR'' KHORRASAN HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 9'11'' x 12'11'': A round central medallion that looks like a kaleidoscope with concentric circles with different designs and colors ending in small pendants radiating out at the edges is the centerpiece of this rug. The four corners of the field are like quarters if the central medallion in color and design. Over the rest of the midnight blue field are a multitude of flower heads and palmettes that are linked by white outlined vines. The white really stands out and accents the whole design of the field. A similar effect is found in the main border of the rug.
CONDITION: There is some wear on the side selvedges but otherwise good condition.

1023 Click for larger picture APPROX. 35-45 YEAR OLD PERSIAN ''TABRIZ'' HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 8' x 11'3'': A pretty cherry red field has a large blue ground medallion with ivory, red, and green colored flowers and trees. The medallion has a pale blue outline and spandrels at either end. The rest of the field has an interesting white with dots grid work of lines that both create different spaces and link them to each other and to the central medallion. Within the panels are various floral designs. The four corners of the field are pale yellow and light blue with floral designs like those in the rest of the field. The deep blue main border has more of the grid work found in the field.
CONDITION: Some wear on side selvedge but otherwise good condition.

Miro studied at the Barcelona Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie Gali and eventually moved to Paris. There he became friends with Picasso, Hemingway, Klee and Ernst and was accepted as a Surrealist. In his 70's he produced bronze and in his 80's he worked with Royo who created tapestries. Miro transformed them from appreciated folk art to masterpieces by applying different materials and techniques. 2250

1045 Click for larger picture MROZEWSKI, Stefan, (Polish, 1894-1975): 5 Wood Cuts from The Dante's Inferno Series, 18.75'' x 14.5'' with margins, pencil signed, numbered, unframed. Mrozewski studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and Krakow, later residing in Paris and Amsterdam where his art gained recognition. He illustrated M. Schwob's King with the Golden Mask. Mrozewski's subjects included religious themes, landscapes and portraits. He also illustrated books by Dante, Cervantes, Dostoyesky, Rilke, Villon, Schvog and others. Mrozewski emigrated to the United States in 1951. He is largely known for his wood engravings and several examples are included in The Library of Congress' permanent collection.
CONDITION: Varies according to print. Several prints have tears and missing paper in margins, scattered foxing and staining, tape removal will be required. Sold as is.

The large central medallion's center has an ornate vase on a stand and from out it is a large palmette and sprays of flowers. A red, white, and green tracery design is edged by a wreath of smaller flower sprays. All around the central medallion are various other ornate floral vases on stands. The four corners of the field have paisleys that create a border as well as an inner design. The red main border and the pale blue and ivory guard complete this interesting rug.
CONDITION: There is some shading and some slight stains that are barely visible in the blue field.

1168 Click for larger picture APPROX. 35-55 YR OLD PERSIAN HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 10'1'' x 13'5'': This is a very finely knotted Classic Traditional Persian rug. The large ivory and red central medallion with spandrels at either end rest on a deep blue field. The four corners match the medallion in design and colors. The field is covered with a profusion of flowers of various types, sizes, and colors. The dark blue main border is banded by medium blue guard borders. This rug has all the hallmarks of a quality rug with its good clear colors, it's execution of design, and its bigger palette of colors.
CONDITION: Condition is generally good with some color run visible on the back caused by a stain.

Narrow red and yellow columns are found on either side of the Mihrab, or niche. Down the center is a red Tree of Life with tulip like blooms, a vase and a basket of flowers. The darker blue borders complete the rug.
CONDITION: Condition is good with some slight stains visible in the ivory corners and the outer border.

1195 Click for larger picture CORNEJO, Francisco, (American, 1892-1963): WPA Era New York City Scene with Empire State Building, Gouache, sight size 19'' x 14'', signed lower left, encased in contemporary frame, 25.5'' x 19.5''. A painter and archaeologist, Francisco Cornejo was born in La Paz, Mexico in 1892. Cornejo moved to Los Angeles in 1911 where he executed several interior and exterior mural decorations for the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles designed by the noted architectural firm of Morgan Wells and Clements. He was a resident of Los Angeles from 1911-32 except during 1919-24 when he was in San Francisco, where he lectured on ancient American art to San Francisco public school teachers. He exhibited his work in Mexico City, at Stanford University, and at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. He was most known for reviving Pre-Colombian art specializing in Mayan and Aztec themes and the California Missions. In 1919 he designed Mayan and Toltec sets and costumes for Ted Shawn, head of the pioneering Denishawn Dancers. Then during the 1920's he designed homes in the Mayan Revival style. In 1926 he curated a well-publicized exhibition of ancient American art and its modern applications in Los Angeles. The white ground has an elaborate tall vase that has a variety of flowers that make a large bouquet that fills the center of the field. At the base of the field are six deer standing on rocks. Behind them spring up other flowering vines that fill in the sides of the field. There are pairs of birds perched here and there throughout the field and in the main red ground border. This is a pretty rug with lots of detail. Condition is good. 350
1201 Click for larger picture USS TRIPPE DD 403 BRASS COMMISSIONING PLAQUE: From the quarterdeck of the USS Trippe, US Navy Destroyer DD 403 which was commissioned November 1, 1939 and served throughout World War II in the Atlantic, North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific Theaters. Participating in the 1943 Solerno and 1944 Anzio Invasions, she finished the war in the western Pacific off the coast of Chichi Jima. The Executive Officer of the ship (the USS Trippe) at the time was Lieutenant Vincent L. Cassani Jr USN and was the representative of the United Nations to a War Crimes Trial against the commandant of the garrison on Chichi Jima and after a 1-day trial and with the concurring votes of the Royal Navy Representatives and Chinese Airforce Representatives, they hung the Commandant of the Garrison for war crimes I care not to mention here. Within 3 years Vincent L. Cassini JR made Captain and was commanding officer of the USS Trippe. From his estate comes The USS Trippe Commissioning Plaque acquired before the ship was included in a test of nuclear weapons in the Bikini Atoll Islands in 1946. Anchored 1000 yards from ground zero, she became so radioactive that is was unsafe approach her and after extensive testing and exhaustive attempts to keep her afloat due metallic deterioration, she was towed to deep water off Kwajalein and sunk by gunfire. Just as a side note... In that raid on Chichi Jima, a then 20 yr. old dive bomber pilot George H. G. Bush flying off the carrier USS San Jacinto was shot down by the Japanese and subsequently rescued by a US Navy Submarine barely avoiding capture and certain death by the Garrison at Chichi Jima. Provenance provided by Captain Vincent L. Cassani III. This one and only heavy solid brass historical plaque measures approx. 10'' x 15'' and in the Navy tradition, polished by thousands of US Navy Sailors over its time in service. 1200

1208 Click for larger picture CURRY, John Steuart, (American, 1897-1946): Several Landscape Sketches Inside his Book ''John Steuart Curry's Pageant of America'', 2 drawings on 1 page are dated 1944, signed by Curry and dedicated to Sara Ross. Also included is a handwritten letter by Mrs. Curry to Sara Ross indicating that Mr. Curry and Ross worked together. 1st Sketch measures 4.5'' x 5'' and the 2nd measures 2'' x 4.5''. Curry attended the Art Institute of Chicago, and remained there for two years, supporting himself with odd jobs. He tried to enlist when war was declared but was sent home for being under-age. In 1918 he enrolled at Geneva College, played football for two seasons, and spent the following five years training to earn his money as an illustrator of ''blood-and-thunder'' scenes for a popular western story magazine. Curry set out to paint American subjects and to celebrate American patriotism and regional pride and committed to creating a worthwhile picture or give up painting. There in 1928 from memory he painted his first picture that became famous, Baptism in Kansas, which was recognized nationally as work of a new American genre. In 1930, he had his first one-man exhibition, held at the Whitney Studio Club, and was received enthusiastically by critics. Curry painted many murals for Washington's Government buildings, his work hangs in the Metropolitan Museum and he ranks with top United States artists. He has shown in the Whitney Museum of American Art and in the Chicago Art Institute. 200
