1001 Click for larger picture WARTHEN, Ferol Sibley, (American, 1890-1986): ''Sunrise'', Woodcut, sight size 21'' x 13'', 24.5'' x 15.25 with margins, pencil signed lower right, titled lower left and dated 1979, #4, exhibition label verso from Provincetown Printmakers Special Exhibition August-October at the Provincetown Heritage Museum, 1979, handwritten card reads ''one block method.watercolor.spoon rubbed-japanese paper each print unique'', framed, 28'' x 19.25''. Spending her summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts gave Warthen the opportunity to be part of the Provincetown Printers art colony. The colony was started in 1915 by B. J. O. Nordfeldt, and other artists who had fled Europe. Her white line woodcuts are done from a single block of wood, with each color done separately and applied in separate applications. This technique was passed on from Nordfeldt to Lazzell to Warthen.
CONDITION: Full margins, 2 creases in right margin running entire length of print, hinge mounted, good colors.

CONDITION: Top of case under bonnet slide has repair on left side, other wear to case consistent with age and use, minor flecks to dial, currently running however not guaranteed to continue.

1021 Click for larger picture APPROX. 20-35 YR. OLD TURKISH HAND KNOTTED SILK ON COTTON RUG, 5'6'' x 7'9'': A beautiful finely knotted carpet with a paneled design. The various panels, none of which repeat, have designs that range from a traditional prayer saph with a hanging lamp and columns to outdoor scenes with flowering trees at rivers edge, swans and ducks serenely swimming. The attention and amount of detail, the composition of colors and their placement, the balance and beauty of the complete rug let us know that this is the work of a master weaver. Semi-circular top with radiating design of Macassar and Ebony. Double pedestal plated base with cabinetry having drawers and doors also made of the exotic Macassar Ebony wood. Measures 2 1/2'h x 7' 1'' x 5 1/2' . Not wanting to pay the 1 Million+ price tag for an original by Ruhlmann being offered in a New York Gallery, Michael Egan, co-owner of Alamo Car Rentals, commissioned master cabinet makers Justo and Ernesto Escobar in Pompano Beach FL. to make this replication. Sources say $30,000 was paid just for the Macassar tree used to make this one-only Masterpiece and It is featured on their web site at http://www.escobarenterprise.com/welcome-1.html

1044 Click for larger picture APPROX. 20-35 YR OLD PERSIAN OR INDO-PERSIAN HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 10' x 14': Red, black, and white are the primary colors used in this rug. The rich, velvety red field has a large medallion within a medallion in the center and a delicate design of various flowers, leaves, and vines traces around the center. The four corners of the field are white and black. Those and the black ground main border intensify the red of the main field. Condition is good.
CONDITION: Approx. 69.5 pounds

1045 Click for larger picture WHISTLER, James Abbott McNeill, (American, 1834-1903): ''Eagle Wharf'' , Etching, one of the Thames set, sight size 6'' x 8.5'', signed in the plate lower margin, framed, 12.5'' x 15'', H V Allison and Company label affixed verso. American born and British based, Whistler was all about ''art for art's sake''. His subtle delicate style was an interesting contrast to his outward persona which was not these things. Later in his career, Whistler began giving his art musically inspired titles and he attributed this influence to a musician friend. In the late 1870s, Whistler painted a portrait of his mother after a model did not show for an appointment. There were very mixed reactions to the austere portrait. At some point his mother began living with him giving him a more respectable appearance, making him more acceptable to patrons.
CONDITION: Not examined out of frame, print appears to have been cleaned, sold as is.

1045A Click for larger picture PENNELL, Joseph, (American, 1857-1926): ''Little Venice'', sight size 5.25'' x 9.5'', pencil signed lower right, Albert Schwartz label verso circa 1883, painted black frame, 14.5'' x18.25''. Pennell, born to Quaker parents, developed into a painter, illustrator, etcher, lecturer, critic, author, teacher. He was a pupil in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and his unusual ability in etching was recognized by his instructor. In 1881 he went to Europe to illustrate some of the Italian writings of W. D. Howells and subsequently received recognition from Philip Gilbert Hamerton. Pennell illustrated Hamerton's book on a tour along the river Seine and the fame from this earned him many commissions. Pennell's drawings and etchings were numerous and some critics viewed him as without peer in this medium. He did lithographs of the Panama Canal, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. He won numerous awards for his work.
CONDITION: Toning around the margins, scattered spotting, not examined out of frame, sold as is.

1049 Click for larger picture SEMI-ANTIQUE, 50-85YRS OLD, PERSIAN HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 8'2'' x 12': An old rug that has good colors and an attractive design. This rug is still interesting even though it is quite worn in places. The tan colored field is covered with swirling curlicue vines in white accented with red that go in and out among green leaves, palmettes, and flowers. Blue and red guard borders surround the field and the main border that is one shade darker tan than the field. There is an inscription in one large blue and red flower found in the center of the main border at one end of the field.
CONDITION: This rug has areas of wear, especially in the field at one end. Approx. 53 pounds

1057 Click for larger picture APPROX. 20-40 YR OLD PAK-PERSIAN HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 8'2'' x10'3'': An attractive rug with repeating alternating motifs that look like stylized vases of flowers on a white field. The colors used include pink, red, greens, black, and pale yellow. The densely covered field is edged by a mostly black ground main border that has panels in pink and yellow with smaller motifs in between. The light colored guard borders have a repeating small shield-like pattern. Condition is good.

Running through the field, the center medallion, and the corners is a repeating design made by four points with palmettes in darker colors linked by vines that form a diamond shape. The black colored palmettes and corners of the field are the foil to set off the lighter colors that make up most of the rug's field and borders. This rug has a soft palette that would be an attractive addition to many areas in a home. Condition is good. 500

A repeating pattern of three vary colored roses are placed within a diamond shaped grid work of flowered vines. Individual roses are in the corners or points of the vines that are on a white field. The main border pattern is very close to that of the main field. Only the blue/grey guard borders break and also frame the overall pattern. Condition is good.

Most of the colors used are soft pastels with some black introduced to outline or emphasize some of the designs. The border has smaller panels that are similar to those found in the field. OLD PERSIAN HAND KNOTTED WOOL RUG, 9'4'' x 12'6'': This rug features a large blue central medallion with spandrels hanging at either end, resting on a red colored field. The smaller motifs that are within the medallion and that cover the field are more geometric than curvilinear and include small stylized trees and different types of birds. The wide blue main border completes the rug.
CONDITION: There are some areas of visible wear but they don't detract too much from the overall look of the rug.

Kirmse was committed to her studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London when she was urged by her friends to vacation with them in the U.S., and she did. Kirmse did not return with her friends but rather stayed in the U.S. to further advance her musical career which didn't go as she hoped. She explored and developed her artistic skills by frequenting the Bronx zoo. Etchings were her forte and where she signed her etchings, she did not number them as is the practice today.

Pale yellow guard borders are on either side of the red ground main border that has a repeating pattern of palmettes with flowering vines in between. Round rugs are more difficult to make than rectangular rugs. This one has good clear colors combined with a good design. Fringed all around too. Condition is good.

Emanuel was born to Henryk Glicenstein, a sculptor. Eventually his family emigrated to the U.S. and Emanuel changed his name to Romano wanting to achieve artistic success on his own merit. During and after WWII, Romano produced pieces graphically depicting the holocaust. He moved to Israel in the 1950s to establish a museum in his father's memory. His pieces are exhibited in a number of renowned museums and galleries including: Indianapolis Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston Fine Arts Museum, and the Musee Nacional de France.

Because of his poor health, Austrian spent a great deal of time on the family farm where his mother encouraged him to paint. While there, he became fascinated by hens and chicks which influenced much of his work. To promote the family business, he gave each customer an original oil painting. Eventually, he sold the family business to focus on his art. His success came from his paintings of chicks and chickens. In London he became known as the ''Landseer of Chickens''. One of his more successful ventures was the development of ads for the Bon Ami Company based on paintings that featured chicks. The trademark chicks are still used by Bon Ami today.

This rug has the formal elegant look of a French Aubusson rug with its realistically drawn roses and its compartmentalized layout. The large central medallion has a beige field with an inner pale grey medallion. A cluster of roses is in the center and it is outlined by pink and red and green scrolling vines and leaves. The four corners of the field have more clusters of roses on a pale grey ground. The wide border looks more like a series of panels with yet more roses placed on the ends and sides. The outer border has a small repeating shield like design.
CONDITION: There are some slight stains and soiling. Approx. 78.5 pounds

Raphael studied at the Beaux Artes in Belgium and the Academie Julian. Overtime, his style evlolved using broader and freer brushstrokes similar to the post-Impressionist style. He was married and his family grew; they became the subjects of some of his pieces. Raphael and his family lived in Holland until WWII threatened at which time they moved to San Francisco. He was a skilled printmaker and produced numerous etchings and wood cuts.

Gregory showed artistic talent early. She did professional line drawings of children for a local newspaper and at 17, their father took her and her brother to Europe to be exposed to classic art and music. Upon her return Pratt enrolled at the Pratt Institute in New York and studied at the Art Student League with Robert Henri, meeting her future husband there. Dorothy demonstrated a range of styles and mediums and illustrated over 20 books. Gregory exhibited at many prestigious places, and her work can be found in the permanent collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Art and the Congressional Library.
